The maneuvers by the Algerian diplomacy to torpedo the appointment of Moroccan Amina Salmane as representative of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) to the African Union (AU) were doomed to failure.
Algeria tried to vilify Beccouche and undermine his prerogatives as AMU secretary general through a biased political campaign at the AU in order to hamper this appointment.
Noticing that its efforts were in vain, Algeria then targeted directly president of the AU Commission Moussa Faki in a statement describing the decision to officially receive the credentials of Salmane as irresponsible, thoughtless, even reckless.
The appointment of Salmane to such position is crystal clear and abides by the rules and regulations of the Union, as well as by the powers vested in the secretary general of the regional bloc, according to diplomats from the Maghreb Union.
The audience that Moussa granted to Salmane and the acceptance of her credentials reinforced the lawfulness of her status as representative of the Arab Maghreb Union to the African Union.
By choosing this obstructionist behavior, Algeria ridiculed itself and undermined its own arguments. In fact, the hasty Algerian approach is legally baseless and fails to camouflage its political motives, said the same sources who affirm that such unsound acts are actually paralyzing the AMU.
