The first kidney transplant from a living donor had been successfully performed in the Sheikh Khalifa International University Hospital in Casablanca.
The patient, who suffered from end-stage renal failure on hemodialysis, received her brother’s kidney after medical confirmation of compatibility and absence of impediments, said the hospital in a statement.
“The patient and the donor underwent together, before the surgery, a series of medical examinations to assess their health and the chances of the transplant success,” added the hospital.
The eight-day post-surgery medical monitoring showed resumption of normal renal function.
After receiving the medical approval, the donor appeared in court to confirm his consent to donate his kidney without any coercion.
The hospital said that this kidney transplant is a step towards performing similar surgeries, including liver and heart transplants.
