Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said, Friday, that the Moroccan authorities arrested about 200 sub-Saharan migrants who tried to storm into the occupied enclave of Sebta, EFE news agency reported.
The Minister said that Spanish security forces did not have to intervene because the Moroccan gendarmerie prevented the migrants from approaching the border with Spain.
The Spanish Civil Guard temporarily closed the border crossing at “Tarajal” and deployed their units to prevent any further attempts, added the Minister.
“The collaboration with Morocco in the fight against illegal migration and, above all, against human trafficking mafias, is very important,” said Grande-Marlaska, adding that today’s operation is clear proof of it.
The Interior Minister will travel to Melilla on Apr.17 to hold a meeting with government delegate Sabrina Moh, and the heads of the city’s national security and Civil Guard.
Grande-Marlaska visited Melilla in Mar. 2022, after the border between Spain and Morocco experienced the highest number of irregular entrance attempts in two days.
