Head of Morocco’s Forecasts and Statistics Office (HCP) Ahmed Lahlimi Alami sounded the alarm over the current price hike wave, stressing that it is persistent and non-circumstantial in the absence of effective government measures to curb it.
In an interview with a local newspaper, Lahlimi said that Morocco is in the process of transforming the structure of its social segments, adding that the middle class, which is the backbone of society, will turn into a poor class. “The gap between the middle class and the upper class will widen.”
Lahlimi also said that inflation and price surge are related to internal issues, not external ones such as the Covid 19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
He affirmed that, due to inflation, price hike will become the rule not the exception.
Activists explained that this situation is due to the failure of governmental plans, especially in the field of agriculture.
