Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition fell apart on Monday after massive overnight rallies were staged following the dismissal of defense chief Yoav Gallant, which put pressure on the government to suspend its contentious plans to revamp the court.
An official in the ruling Likud party said Netanyahu would halt the overhaul, reported Reuters.
Netanyahu was expected to deliver a speech on Monday to announce the plan “needed to restore balance to the system,” but it was deferred while he met with parties’ leaders amid concerns that his nationalist-religious alliance was fraying.
The detractors describe Judicial reform as a danger to Israeli democracy.
