The Moroccan Meteorological Agency (DGM) announced, on Thursday, that 2022 was the hottest year for Morocco, with an increase of +1.63°C compared to the temperatures over the 1981-2010 period.
During the celebration of the World Meteorological Day, themed “The future of weather, climate and water across generations”, the DGM said that the past year has broken 4 records of average monthly temperature in July, October, November and December.
For extreme weather, Morocco posted a record of daily temperature of 49.1°C, on July 10 in the city of Smara (south).
The year 2022 witnessed a 27% decrease in rainfall, as the 2021-2022 agricultural year was the driest on record, with a 46% shortfall compared to usual figures.
Strong decreases were noted in hydraulic basins, reaching 81% in the basin of Sakia El Hamra-Oued Eddahab, said the DGM.
The world’s average temperature in 2022 was about 1.15°C, while global CO2 emissions increased by 0.9%. The global average sea level continued to rise in 2022, with a rate of 3.4 mm/year, the DGM concluded.
