Algeria’s relations with Morocco have reached “the point of no return”, said Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Tuesday.
In an interview with Qatari channel Al-Jazeera, Tebboune blamed Morocco for the current state of affairs, regretting the deteriorating relations between the two countries.
“Our position is a response to Morocco’s actions, we were never the ones who started the problem”, said the Algerian President.
In addition to disputes over Sahara, Algeria did not accept the resumption of ties between Morocco and Israel and the significant progress they made at various levels.
Al-Jazeera recalled that US President Donald Trump recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
During the interview, Tebboune also turned his ire towards Spain, which he accused of being biased towards Morocco.
Algiers suspended a two-decades-old friendship treaty with Spain because the latter backed a 2007 proposal by Morocco to offer Sahara autonomy under its sovereignty, describing it as the “most serious, realistic, and credible basis”.
Algeria cut diplomatic relations with Morocco in 2021 accusing it of “hostile actions”.
