American Senator Daniel Scott Sullivan called on Thursday to relocate the United States Africa Command (Africom) headquarters from Stuttgart (southwest of Germany) to Morocco.
During a meeting by the United States Senate Committee on Armed Services, Sullivan highlighted that Africom should be in Africa, and specifically in Morocco “given that it is a strategic and crucial partner in Africa, and one of the signatories of the Abraham Accords.”
The Senator added that many superpowers are implanting their roots such as China, Russia, and Iran, and that could affect the US position in the continent.
Established in 2007, Africom is a US unified combatant command responsible for fighting regional conflict and maintaining military relations with 53 African countries. The command covers the whole continent except Egypt.
