2,457 migrants were returned to their countries from Morocco in 2022, wrote the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in its annual report.
The program dubbed “Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR)” returned 1,443 men, 616 women, and 398 minors to 26 countries.
The rate of voluntary returns in 2022 has increased slightly compared to 2021 (2377 migrants) and has tripled compared to 2020 (796 migrants).
These migrants also benefited from the organization’s support in finding work in their country of origin.
The same returnees also received other types of assistance during the return process such as medical assistance and administrative support.
More than half of those assisted migrants were from Côte d’Ivoire (657) and Guinea (598). The rest are from countries such as Senegal (367), Cameroon (152), Nigeria (146), Mali (117), and Congo (111).
61% of the migrants returned due to a lack of financial resources, while 15% chose to return after their migration journey to their country of destination was interrupted.
