Morocco did not wait for the EU CBAM or the Green Deal to decarbonize, said Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour, recalling the enormous efforts by the country in the development of renewables.
CBAM or the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is a mechanism that imposes a price to be paid for goods exported to Europe for their carbon emissions. It will take effect as of Dec 3, 2025.
The minister was speaking at a conference organized by newspaper “Aujourd’hui Le Maroc”, on Mar.9, under the slogan “Industry Decarbonization: Requirements, Issues and Prospects.”
The event debated the necessary preparations that Morocco will make to remain both competitive and efficient in the field, as Morocco exports 2/3 of its products to Europe.
According to the Minister, nearly 65% of the 12,000 industrial units operating in Morocco are less than 12 years old and therefore already complying with international standards.
The Minister highlighted OCP’s green investment program based on green hydrogen and seawater desalination.
During the meeting, The Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency (AMEE) and the Foundation of Education for Employment (EFE-Morocco) signed an agreement on building the capacities of young people in the energy efficiency sector.
