Morocco was ranked 7th among high-performing countries in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), according to its recently-published report.
The country rates high in three main CCPI categories: GHG Emissions, Energy Use, and Climate Policy.
Morocco has promised to create 600,000 hectares of forests by 2030.
The experts applauded the new government’s efforts to enhance the country’s climate performance. Yet, they observed that the global COVID-19 pandemic, water scarcity, and the geopolitical and economic turmoil resulting from the Russia-Ukraine conflict are putting brakes on the country’s ambitions.
The CCPI experts welcomed the country’s recent significant developments. However, they criticized current laws for lacking implementation force and industry sector conformity.
The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) is an instrument to enable transparency in national and international climate politics in 59 countries and the EU, which together account for 92% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
