Morocco was portrayed, Sunday by the Pan-African magazine “Jeune Afrique” (JA), as an African model in sports diplomacy.
The magazine stressed Morocco’s achievements in hosting sports events and encouraging sportspersons.
JA quoted Jean-Baptiste Guégan as saying that Morocco attracts by its ideas, not by money, unlike Qatar and the KSA.
Guégan said that Morocco is placing a large bet on its infrastructure – stadiums, hotels, transportation and communications – to establish itself as a “major player” on the continent, not only in football but in other kinds of sports too.
He added that Morocco hosted the African Nations Championship in 2018 and the women’s CAN in 2022.
The country is a strong candidate for hosting CAN men’s 2025. Morocco was scheduled to host the 2026 World Cup but it went to the US-Canada-Mexico trio for economic reasons.
The author concluded by saying that he would not be surprised if, in the medium term, Morocco were to be a candidate for the organization of the Summer Olympics.
