Morocco’s Forecasts and Statistics Office (HCP) said roughly 1.5 million women are victims of cyber violence through emails, phone calls, text messages and other means.
In a note issued on international women’s day, HCP wrote that the proportion of cyber violence is higher among urban women (16%). 29% of these women are aged 15 to 19, 25% are highly educated, 30% are single, and 36% are students.
In 73% of cases, cyber violence is committed by a stranger. This new type of violence is perpetrated in 4% of cases by friends, relatives, co-workers or classmates.
Cyber violence represents 19% of all forms of violence against women. It increases to 34% among girls aged 15 to 19 and to 28% among girls aged 20 to 24.
