Emmanuel Macron picked Algeria over Morocco several years ago and is breaking age-old diplomatic and economic ties in an absurd attempt to operate a rapprochement with Algiers, said French historian Jean-Baptiste Noé.
Noé, who is also an associate researcher at Paris-based think tank “Institut Des Libertés”, said that Macron developed an almost pathological relationship with Algiers. During his first mandate and the beginning of his second, he multiplied visits, made concessions trying to satisfy Algiers and ignored its rotten regime.
The French historian said Algeria represents almost nothing in France’s commercial and economic exchanges, and even the gas subject is of secondary importance. “Algerian infrastructure is dilapidated and its natural resources are drained.”
The gas of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Mozambique Channel is much more promising than the aging deposits of Algiers, he stressed.
Macron wants to go back in history and hopes to leave his mark on the Algerian policy. In a permanent and biased rewriting of history, he damages the image of France and falsifies historical facts. While Emmanuel Macron had assured that he is on good terms with the Moroccan monarch, Rabat’s response was that the ties are “neither good nor friendly”.
Morocco is a nation with numerous investments thanks to its stability, law upholding, and workforce. This makes the country much appreciated by French entrepreneurs.
The historian also said that French-Moroccan ties have always been good and long-standing and it is manifested by the presence of Prince Moulay Hassan at the funeral of the Count of Paris in 2019.
A pro-Algerian lobbying movement is doing everything to impede the French-Morocco ties, even though Paris’ interests are with Rabat, not Algiers.
Morocco’s Tangier Med is the gateway of European products to Africa. It is an essential place for economic and industrial exchanges, he emphasized.Morocco has also a unique situation in Africa thanks to the Monarchy which ensures stability, unlike Algeria and Egypt which are ruled by military regimes.
By ruining the France-Morocco relationship, Macron is damaging France’s interests and the role it could play in Africa, while gaining nothing from an illusory relationship with Algeria.
