Dozens of Congolese citizens demonstrated, on Wednesday, against the visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), accusing him of backing Rwanda, wrote French news agency (AFP).
Protesters shouted outside the French Embassy in Kinshasa, “Macron assassin, Poutine help” while waving Russian flags and banners reading “Macron godfather of the DRC’s balkanization”, “Congolese People Say No to France’s Policy”, and “Macron unwanted in the DRC”.
DRC accused Rwanda of supporting the active rebellion in the east “M23”. “We are here to say no to the arrival of Emmanuel Macron because France is the cause of our misery,” said Josue Bung of the citizen’s movement “Sang-Lumumba”.
Emmanuel Macron affirmed on Monday that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of DRC “is not up for discussion”, but he did not mention Rwanda, which is our aggressor!, said the demonstrators.
The Russian flags mean “we don’t need France anymore, we want to work with trustworthy partners, like Russia or China”, said another protest organizer.
“Congolese people expect France to make a firm commitment to the return of peace”, said DRC Spokesperson Patrick Muyaya. “We want France to clarify its position with clear words”.
Same story in Libreville (Gabon) where dozens of individuals took to streets, notably in Mindoubé neighborhood, banging pots and pans with kitchen utensils to protest against Macron’s visit.
