The discovery, early February in the province of El Jadida (near Casablanca), of a pre-Islamic tombstone with an inscription in “Tifinagh” prompted the National Institute of Archaeology (INSAP) to begin its investigations.
Professor Abdelaziz El-Khyari examined the site’s pictures and revealed that the gravestone carries Libyan inscriptions, from which the “Tifinagh” is derived.
Archaeologist and director of the Center for Studies and Research on Moroccan-Lusitanian Heritage Aboulkacem Chebri said that the so-called Libyan or Punic inscriptions, Amazigh in general, are thought to date few centuries B.C.
Efforts made so far have not yet allowed to locate precisely the site of the discovery, since the stone has been moved which complicates the task of archaeologists.
