58 people, including kids, perished after a wooden sailing boat carrying migrants collided with rocks off the southern Italian coast early Sunday, said Reuters.
The ship set sail from Turkey few days ago, carrying migrants from Afghanistan, Iran, and other countries, and crashed in rough weather near Steccato di Cutro, a beach resort on Calabria’s eastern coast.
81 individuals survived, with 20 hospitalized, including one in critical condition.
One survivor was detained on suspicion of migrant trafficking.
