The Tindouf camps, particularly the Aousserd camp, have been experiencing, since the beginning of February, chaotic events, marked with excessive violence and vandalism.
The protagonists are a group of unemployed young people, with links to the illicit trafficking networks operating in the camps, according to local sources.
The latest attack took place on February 21-22, when the group set ablaze three tankers. Three days ago, the same group attacked the polisario’s police station in Aousserd camp.
The flare-up of tension in the camps is caused by the expansion of drug, cigarette and cannabis trafficking.
The repeated strife incidents further weaken the position of Brahim Ghali, who was recently reappointed as Polisario’s leader. They could explain Ghali’s absence from the latest AU Summit, a must-attend event for him so far.
These events bring to memory the bloody skirmishes that took place in 2022 between the Reguibat tribe and the polisario.
