Algeria has a historical obsessive hostility towards Morocco as it perceives the Kingdom not only as a rival country, but also as a real enemy that aims to destabilize its regime, said Algerian activist and opponent Anwar Malek.
Malek was keen to speak with BarlamanToday and throw light on this Algerian hostility as well as on the future of the Moroccan Sahara issue amid the current developments.
Anwar is a well-known Algerian journalist based in France. He is also an author, political activist, and international human rights observer.
“Without any doubt, Morocco’s tireless efforts led to major achievements in the Sahara issue, among which we may mention the recognition of the US and Spain which came in favor of the Kingdom,” he explained.
Anwar went on to say that countries which pose as enemies of Morocco are still taking their payment from the Algerian treasury to maintain their position through extortion. Algeria had spent billions of dollars on this issue, he said.
Referring to the Algerian regime’s contradictory attitude when it comes to self-determination, Anwar said that the regime should first grant self-determination to Algerians themselves before proposing it to others. “The last fair elections organized in Algeria were in 1992,” he said.
As for the Polisario, Anwar wondered: “why did Algeria create a state for the separatist movement inside the country and is financing their leader Ibrahim Ghali? Where is this self-determination when any opposing voice in the Tindouf camps gets silenced?” Anwar did not miss the opportunity to mention the population in the Tindouf camps who wants to return to Morocco.
When asked about the possibility that Algeria might change its intransigent position, the Algerian activist answered sarcastically “the Algerian regime is the dumbest regime in the world. It adopted a losing cause just to settle scores. The world will not accept the existence of a new state in this region”.
He further emphasized that Algerians now do not rely on the state’s media to get all their news.
Speaking about the future of the Sahara issue, Anwar confidently commented that Morocco has already won it and “only small steps are remaining at the UN to close this file for good.”
Anwar also predicted that the Polisario entity will be soon classified as a terrorist group. “The Polisario has no choice but to remain in the camps dreaming of a fake republic. In the end, Algeria will pay the price of empowering this snake,” he remarked.
Regarding the reasons for Algeria’s hatred towards Morocco, he explained that from a historical background and described it as a historical showdown.
“Algerian generals are accumulating a fortune from armament deals, and the money goes to their accounts in Europe and abroad, especially the deals with Russia that protect this regime, so they need to justify those deals,” he affirmed.
The regime is trying to impose educational, media, political, and military agendas that instill hatred in its people, but Algerians know better and can tell that this is an artificial hostility.
“Algeria is afraid of one thing, that Morocco will support the Algerian people, because Morocco supported the Algerians in their revolution against France, and now the regime is afraid of Morocco to support the Algerians in their liberation from this regime,” he added.
As for the latest diplomatic row between France and Algeria, he said that it is a fabricated crisis by both parties to bypass the American pressure.
Anwar didn’t hide his optimism by saying that a political change will take place in Algeria sooner or later. “This change is coming, whether they like it or not,” he concluded.
