The volume of rainfall has improved by nearly 96% between Sept.1, 2022, and Feb. 13, 2023, compared to the same period in the previous year, said, on Wednesday in Rabat, Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka.
Baraka, who was a guest at MAP Forum themed “Water Stress: Measures Taken and Future Prospects,” said that in terms of water resources, there are now 2.15 billion m3, a 192% increase in dam reservoir year on year.
He pointed out that the budget allocated to the 2020-2027 national program for drinking water supply and irrigation jumpted from 115,4 Bln MAD to 150 Bln MAD.
This initiative has expedited the pace of water investment by ensuring water security amid the worsening climate change.
The program includes two major dams in Bouregreg and Tensift, as well as five medium dams in Benslimane, Tata, Tiznit, El Haouz, and Taroudant. 200 other projects are to be programmed between 2025 and 2027.
The Minister recalled the signing of agreements on three basins totalling 2.3 Bln MAD, as well as the signing of an agreement on small-sized dams worth 4.27 Bln MAD.
He stated that 129 small dams are scheduled between 2022 and 2024.
Baraka also mentioned the signing of an agreement on the supply of drinking water in rural areas for 4.31 Bln MAD.
