Sanchez’s Government is encouraging Spanish companies, based in Algeria, to change their destination due to the deterioration of bilateral relations, following Spain’s change of position on the Moroccan Sahara, according to the “El Independiente”.
Spain’s Industry Minister María Reyes Maroto Illera said that the SMEs which are affected by the degradation of commercial ties between Madrid and Algiers should change the country.
The minister proposed Morocco as an alternative, saying that it is a better destination for investment.
Exports from Spain to Algeria in 2021 totaled 2,700 million euros, compared to over 9,500 million euros worth of exports to Morocco, wrote the “El Independiente”.
Relations between Spain and Algeria worsened significantly when Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria’s President, broke unilaterally the good neighborliness and friendship treaty, few months after Moncloa’s historic change of position in the dispute over the Sahara.
