Former American Congressman Michael Flanagan revealed, in an analytical paper published by US news outlet “Newslooks”, the ulterior motives behind the EU Parliament’s ongoing attacks against Morocco.
Flanagan stated that these attacks go beyond the ordinary political and diplomatic engagement between states and institutions, they amount to direct interference in the internal affairs of Morocco.
He believed that there is a hidden agenda after the Kingdom’s resumption of relations with Israel and the US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
Flanagan said that the economic development plans as well as human rights development programs in Morocco caused grave concern to some European countries, adding that Morocco’s exit from the position of dependence on EU states does not play in favor of Europe generally and France particularly.
He also explained that the opening of the Moroccan economy to the American markets worried the trans-Mediterranean trading partners’ former dominance in Moroccan markets, adding that the European dominance in Morocco has ended and the EU (with France in particular) is fighting back with spurious claims in the EU Parliament.
The former congressman recalled the firm response of the Moroccan parliament to the interference in the internal affairs of Morocco and its unanimous decision to reconsider relations with the EU Parliament.
Flanagan further emphasized that one of the causes of these outrageous and persistent attacks is the high cost of energy and the rush of European markets to Algeria to replace lost contracts in the Ukrainian war; as a result, Morocco must be demonized to please the Algerian gas supplier.
He also clarified that the EU negatively distorts Morocco’s image to keep it under the European umbrella as a consumer market.
