The Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT) said that it will stage regional protests on Feb.19 and a general strike in civil service in response to the deterioration of citizens’ purchasing power and the outrageous price hike.
In a statement, the confederation blamed the government for the worsening social crisis and the ensuing repercussions that would affect social instability.
It renewed its call on the government to take immediate action and implement measures meant to curb the surge in prices.
The Union demanded that the government honor its commitments, as outlined in the agreement dated April 30, 2022, by increasing wages, reviewing the income tax laws, institutionalizing social dialogue, and solving social conflicts. It refused to undermine its achievements whether in the retirement case, trade union freedoms, or other workers’ rights.
The Confederation of Democratic Labor urged all citizens and democratic associations to participate widely in the protest.
In response to citizens’ grievances, Minister of Economy Nadia Fettah said on Thursday that meat and vegetable prices will decline in the coming days or weeks.
Fettah added that the government carried out extensive measures to reduce this rise in prices and guarantee the availability of meat markets, through the cancellation of value-added tax and exemption from customs duties on imports of cattle.
The Minister explained that the price increase is due to drought and the cold snap, in addition to manipulations and speculations on the markets.
Fettah stated that the interdepartmental committee in charge of monitoring prices will continue its work especially as Ramadan is nearing.
