Morocco ranks 2nd among Maghreb countries, said the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in its 2022 Democracy Index entitled: “Frontline Democracy and the Battle for Ukraine.”
According to the report, Tunisia topped the rankings of the Maghreb region, followed by Morocco, Mauritania (3rd), Algeria (4th), and Libya (5th).
The Kingdom ranked third in the MENA region, following Israel and Tunisia.
The ranking system is based on five criteria: electoral process and pluralism, the functioning of the government, political participation, democratic political culture, and civil liberties.
In the list, countries are classified according to their scores as “full democracy,” “flawed democracy,” “hybrid regime,” or “authoritarian regime.”
The Democracy Index, which began in 2006, provides a snapshot of the state of democracy in 165 independent states and two territories. This covers almost the entire population of the world and the vast majority of the world’s states.
