The idea of a marine tunnel connecting Morocco and Spain via Gibraltar Strait has been brought back to the forefront after it was first proposed in 1979.
The project was formally discussed, on the sidelines of the 12th Morocco-Spain high-level meeting, between Spain’s Minister of Transport and Urban Agenda Raquel Sánchez Jiménez and Moroccan counterparts, namely Mohamed Abdel Jalil, Minister of Transport and Logistics and Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water.
According to a Spanish Media outlet, the parties agreed to “set a date in the coming days for the joint committee to convene and discuss the next steps regarding the said fixed link project.”
The Spanish Government has allocated 750,000 euros to the Ministry of Transport, which will go to Spanish firm SECEGSA to conduct feasibility studies on the project.
