People of Khenifra, a small Moroccan town in the Middle Atlas mountains, do not have the privilege to access the coast but they can enjoy Aguelmam Azegza, a huge lake fed by rainfall and offering an escape into the wonders of nature.
Families and small kids can be seen enjoying the view and the fresh air all year long, although the number of visitors is higher during the summer.
In winter, few people brave the cold to see the snowflake-clad Aguelmam Azegza, which means the “Green Lake” in Tamazight.
Also dubbed the green pearl, the lake is to be found exactly 32 km from Khenifra, on the road to the Oum Errabia springs at an altitude of 1474m. It is surrounded by Cedar and holm oak trees that are flanking the road. Beholding the trees make us think that they are guarding this marvelous natural site.
Environmental activists have been warning over the past years of the dangers facing the lake that stretches over a surface area of 50 hectares, with a maximum depth of 26 meters.
In addition to its rich flora, the lake is an ideal habitat for different fish species such as tench, carp, roach, perch, or pike.
Besides its environmental role, the lake is key to the local economy. It offers locals a chance to generate revenue by selling local dishes and goods to visitors. They seem to have made a living out of the place.
Tents are set up around the lake where people prepare and sell handmade bread, Msseman, tea, and Tajine.
The tents offer visitors a warm, cozy shelter to enjoy the panoramic, breathtaking snowy view, while sipping tea and having freshly made meals.
Some locals also sell traditional clothes, accessories, and other products that represent the Amazigh culture.
A visitor told us that he regularly comes to enjoy peace and quiet and embrace nature, far away from the city’s stress and noise.
A local merchant said that she has been practicing the job for 10 years now and the site is increasingly witnessing high turnouts during the summer compared to winter.
The vendor also stated that local authorities do not allow the sellers to use the side of the site that was not refurbished. Additionally, the place lacks electricity, making it impossible for residents to carry out their daily activities after sunset or for tourists to remain in the area.
The lake is swarming with all kinds of birds and trees, making it rightfully part of the Khenifra National Park as it is a treasure of biodiversity.
Each season gives this natural site a new color. In summer, the bluish-green scenery makes the lake the perfect spot for outdoor picnics, while the winter weaves a wonderful picture in white and blue. Birdsongs and the trees rustling in the breeze compose relaxing symphonies that make the visitor reconnect with mother nature.
Recently, the site has become more accessible thanks to the paved roads and the new parking lots where people can leave their cars and just stroll along the way.
