The Arab Center in Washington (ACW) issued a report revealing the involvement of the Algerian regime in the Moroccan Sahara issue, by stalling efforts aimed at its resolution.
The report highlighted the importance of the US decision of recognizing the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, which reversed the long-standing US position in support of UN efforts for a negotiated settlement of the Moroccan Sahara conflict.
It also noted the Algerian reaction toward the US decision, which considered it as “foreign maneuvers aimed at destabilizing Algeria”, and bringing “the Zionist entity” closer to its borders.
The report underlined the Algerian disappointment after it was expecting that the new Biden administration backtracks on Trump’s decision on the Moroccan Sahara.
The document stated that the US needs to pressure the Algerian government into improving political freedoms and encouraging democratic change in the country.
It recalled that the Algerian military and intelligence “still pull the strings in the country and close to 300 political activists remain in prison”.
The Hirak movement of educated young people wanting a better future, not just economically but politically as well, is likely to resurface in the not-too-distant future, it concluded.
