U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs Michele Sison lauded Morocco’s efforts in UN peacekeeping operations as well as its support for peace in the MENA region and around the world.
The US official met, on Wednesday in Rabat, with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. The visit aims to discuss shared multilateral priorities across the UN system, in the light of Morocco’s election as member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the period 2023-2025.
On the Sahara issue, the American official reiterated, at a press conference, support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as a serious, credible, and realistic solution to the dispute over the Sahara.
The United States had issued in 2020 a proclamation recognizing the sovereignty of Morocco over the Sahara, reaffirming that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only feasible solution to solve the Sahara issue.
This proclamation was handed to the 193 UN member states, and translated into the six official languages of the United Nations.
This unwavering stance by the USA, a long-standing ally of the Kingdom, was confirmed once again by Sison’s statement in favor of the autonomy initiative.
Sison also voiced steadfast support for UNSG personal envoy for the Sahara Staffan de Mistura, as well as for MINURSO given its role in preserving the UN-brokered peace process.
