Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar, Chairperson of the Committee for Civil Liberties, Justice, and Home Affairs (LIBE) at the European Parliament, said that Morocco is a strategic partner for the EU, and the latter should maintain good relations with the Kingdom.
Speaking Monday at the “Foro Premium Del Atlantico”, the former socialist justice minister stated that he backed the position of his party which voted against the resolution on Morocco’s human rights situation.
Aguilar voiced his concerns over the negative impact that the recent developments could have on relations with the Kingdom.
He pointed out that Morocco is an indispensable economic neighbor and relations with it should be based on mutual respect. “Provoking and criticizing the country’s political and legal systems is very insensitive and could worsen bilateral relations,” he said.
He concluded by comparing Spain to Morocco and how would it feel if its institutions were attacked.
