The Moroccan Parliament decided on Monday to reconsider its relations with the European Parliament (EP), following its latest stance on the Kingdom.
The decision was made during a joint plenary session by the House of Representatives and the House of Advisors.
The European Parliament attempted to meddle in Morocco’s domestic affairs, mainly its legal system and human rights values through the case of Omar Radi. The European legislative body adopted on Jan. 19 a resolution on free speech in the country.
The Moroccan parliament rejected the EP’s biased resolution against the kingdom. It also decided to inform its counterpart of positions taken by MPs and parliamentary groupings as well as forthcoming decisions.
“The Moroccan parliament takes note of this resolution which shook the foundations of trust between the two institutions and undermined the gains made over decades,” read the final statement.
This deviation by the European Parliament shows that the body cannot distinguish facts from opinions, right from wrong, it said.
All parliamentarians, from across the political spectrum, flatly denounce these hostile attempts to prejudice Morocco’s interests and tarnish its image.
They added that the said resolution shows that the EP is overstepping its prerogatives and appointing itself as custodian of a sovereign country governed by the rule of law.
The said EP resolution sabotaged all bilateral meetings and mechanisms and rendered them meaningless, they said, calling on their European peers to show wisdom and good judgement.
