United Nations Peacekeeping Operation (MONUSCO) reported, on Thursday, that mass graves containing 49 bodies were discovered in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
MONUSCO attributed the massacres to CODECO, an ethnic militia operating in Eastern Congo.
42 dead, including 12 women and six children, were discovered buried in the Ituri provincial village of Nyamamba. In addition, seven bodies were discovered in the village of Mbogi, roughly 30 kilometers east of Bunia.
Since the beginning of December, at least 195 civilians were killed and 84 were kidnapped in attacks claimed by CODECO and a rival militia named Zaire. This brought the total number of displaced people in Ituri province to more than 1.5 million, according to the UN mission.
