The UN press service emphasized, on Sunday, that the 200-year-old Jewish cemetery in Fez, is an example that “symbolizes the coexistence of the city’s varied cultures”.
The Jewish cemetery in Fez exemplifies the city’s centuries-old coexistence of numerous groups and demonstrates the city’s status as a melting pot of beliefs and civilizations.
The Jewish cemetery, located in the Mellah (Jewish Neighborhood), is notable for its semi-cylindrical graves, which document Morocco’s flourishing Jewry.
In a video released by the UN, some testimonies are provided, including that of Johanna Devico Ohana, a Jewish volunteer at this cemetery. Ohana recalls the harmony that formerly existed between Morocco and other people living in the country. “We lived in harmony here. We were all aware that we were Jews, Muslims, or Catholics, and we never had any issues with that,” explains Ohana.
This long history made Fez an ideal location for the ninth Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), which took place in November 2022.
