Morocco is forced not to participate in the 7th African Nations Championship (CHAN 2023) scheduled in Algeria from Jan. 13 to Feb. 4, said on Thursday the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) on its official website.
Head of FRMF Fouzi Lakjaa had called for opening Algeria’s airspace and allowing a plane, operated by Moroccan carrier RAM, to land at Constantine airport via a direct flight.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF), the body in charge of organizing the event, had provided an initial approval to the Moroccan request.
However, the FRMF noted with regret that the final authorization for the Rabat-Constantine direct flight has not been confirmed yet by the CAF.
Consequently, the Moroccan U23 football team will not be able to attend the tournament, it said.
