Moroccan actor Abderrahim Tounsi, nicknamed Abderraouf, passed away on Monday at the age of 86 after battling a long illness.
Oussama Tounssi, Abderraouf’s son, announced the death of his father on his Facebook account, which was later confirmed by president of the theater trade union Massoud Bouhcine.
The deceased had been hospitalized earlier due to severe shortness of breath.
The Moroccan comedian was born in 1936 and was imprisoned by the colonial authorities in the 1950s where he developed his passion for theatre.
When set free, he came up with the character Abderraouf in the 1960s, a fact that earned him fame in Morocco and abroad.
Abderraouf marked the memory of several generations with his traditional outfit and funny expressions and gestures. He starred in several movies as Majid (2011) and Ammi (2016).
