Graham Lyon, executive chairman of Sound Energy (SE), announced a promising future for the Kingdom in the field of gas production, in several regions as Tendrara (East), Boujdour (South), and Anoual (East).
This came in an interview with Petroleum Economist following the extension by the Moroccan Office of Hydrocarbons and Mining “ONHYM” of Sound Energy’s Exploration Permits in Anoual and Sidi Moktar, and approved the Company’s application to enter the optional First Complimentary Period under the Grand Tendrara Exploration Permit.
Lyon stated that Moroccan reserves will change the rules of the game in the Mediterranean region, particularly under the Policy of Algeria, which is one of the major gas producers but remain a volatile and untrustworthy partner for various global markets. Its Medgas pipeline will be replaced and joined by the Tendrara field, which is approximately 120 kilometers away.
He added that, in addition to SE activities in the field of Tendrara, the company has recently signed an agreement to explore hydrocarbons offshore of Morocco.
The enterprise holds a 35% stake in Boujdour Atlantic Marine, the investments demonstrate its conviction in the Kingdom’s promising gas production future.
According to him, Morocco is well advanced in its energy transformation plan, with significant renewable energy but still relying largely on coal-fired power. Gas is the preferred transition fuel because of its ability to respond swiftly to peak demand in power generation. Gas is critical to Morocco’s energy demands and growth strategy. As a result, the Tendrara development can play a significant role in fulfilling Morocco’s goals.
Both the Grand Tendrara and Anoual exploration licenses have significant identified potential. Extensive geological and geophysical research backs this up. More than 566bn m3 of gas resources have been anticipated, some of which include discovered gas resources on the block from past operators’ wells that are not part of Tendrara Horst.
The license at Sidi Moktar is less mature and will require a geophysical study before any estimation of prospectivity can be determined.
