Morocco will be one of the countries Linked with “MEDUSA” project, the new submarine cable system linking South European countries (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus) to North African ones (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt).
This project is led by AFR-IX telecom and backed by the EU’s Economic and Investment plan for the Southern Neighborhood.
The European Commission signed an agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) for a €40 million EU grant to support high-speed fiber-optic connection under the Mediterranean as part of the “MEDUSA”.
The €342 million MEDUSA project will directly connect, for the first time, the Northern and Southern shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the Southern countries among themselves via a “high-capacity, multi-country, future-proof optical fiber submarine cable”, said Olivér Várhelyi, EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations.
He added that this long cable will significantly upgrade interconnectivity and spur innovation and research in the region. “About 500 universities, institutes of education and research centers and about 4,5 million students will benefit from increased connectivity”.
AFR-IX telecom is an Internet service provider that delivers Internet and data services to Enterprises, International Carriers and Telecommunication Operators in Africa.
