The Economic, Social, and Environmental Council (CESE) issued a report based on the poll results launched on digital platform “Ouchariko” regarding the bonds linking Moroccan expatriates to their Homeland Morocco.
The CESE stated that Moroccan expatriates represent 15% of the Moroccan society. 7% of Moroccan expats’ GDP contributes to the country’s macroeconomic balance.
The poll revealed that 17.25% of Moroccans residing abroad have no interest in returning home. 51.44% consider alternating periods of stay in Morocco and the country of residence, while 21.15% intend to return for good.
The majority reportedly plan on returning to Morocco to enjoy retirement while others are willing to go home for work opportunities and family reunion. 33.90% of the polled people are attached to Morocco for investment, 94.3% for family visits, 72.53% for remittances, and 81.1% for tourism.
CESE showed that the strong bond between the Moroccan diaspora and Morocco stems from their satisfaction with the institutional aspect of the country, the depth of the National identity spirit, the development of the country’s infrastructure, investment attractiveness, the promotion women’s rights, and cultural diversity.
Moroccan expats criticized and showed dissatisfaction with corruption, property seizure, and fraud. They also complained about bureaucracy, the complexity of administrative procedures, lack of hygiene, poor medical and transportation services, insecurity, and power abuse.
The remittances of the Moroccan diaspora reached about 100 billion MAD in 2022. The majority expressed satisfaction with the consular and banking services, transportation, and cross-border procedures.
