Following the World Cup final game between France and Argentina, on Sunday night, an angry mob took to streets and confronted the French police in various towns, according to local media outlets.
In France, 227 people were detained, including 47 in Paris and its surroundings. 32 law enforcement officers were injured. A significant force of 14 000 police officers and gendarmes had been dispatched around the country, with 2 750 of them stationed in Paris.
In Paris, fireworks mortars were launched at police officers in the early evening on the Champs-Élysées.
In Lyon, approximately 15 persons were arrested for throwing items and targeting the police on Place Bellecour. Garbage cans were set on fire, mortars and smoke bombs were used. Firecrackers were hurled into the city’s central square. The police deployed tear gas and water cannons to clear the area, which had been blocked off.
In the evening, some 300 people battled with police as the mortar fire collided with tear gas. Firefighters were called to put out a fire on the public route.
Mortar fire rang out in the streets of Grenoble. More than 90 garbage cans and containers were set ablaze, as well as tramways, and pyrotechnics targeted police officers who had arrived to manage any overflow.
In Bordeaux, small groups set fire to garbage cans and threw glass bottles at police officers around the Place de la Victoire, where five people were arrested on charges of “violence against a person in authority”, “carrying a prohibited weapon” and “possession of fireworks”.
In Béziers, a minor aged 14 years was taken under custody after firing mortars at a police vehicle.
