President Joe Biden is establishing a new Special Presidential Representative for U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit to coordinate implementation efforts, said the White House in a statement.
Biden affirmed his administration’s commitment to help African countries assess the needed funding to build sustainable and inclusive economies.
The Department of State appointed Ambassador Johnnie Carson to hold this position given his long experience in African diplomacy. Carson served as the former Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs and Ambassador to Kenya, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
Biden will announce the allocation of $55 billion to Africa over the next three years. Carson is expected to coordinate with U.S. and African governments, civil society, private sector, and diaspora representatives to ensure that the important dialogues that began during the Summit lead to durable action.
