German “Welt” TV channel issued Wednesday an apology for misinterpreting a gesture by Moroccan football players and linking it to ISIS.
In a previous news broadcast, the TV channel made a connection between ISIS and three Moroccan players who raised their index finger to celebrate their victory over Portugal, a fact that sparked outrage among Moroccan football fans.
The gesture, which has a religious significance in Islam, was interpreted by the German news outlet as the signal used by ISIS after their conquests.
The “Welt” apologized profusely for this mistake, saying that it did not intend to hurt religious feelings.
