South Africa’s parliament decided on Tuesday to reject the impeachment of President Cyril Ramaphosa, according to the speaker of parliament.
The lawmakers voted 214 to 148 against impeaching Ramaphosa. The ruling African National Congress party, which has a majority in parliament, generally supported Ramaphosa, preventing the motion from receiving the two-thirds vote required to proceed with his impeachment.
A parliamentary report said that Ramaphosa illegally buried at least $580,000 in cash in a sofa at his Phala Phala game ranch. Ramaphosa has denied any wrongdoing in this matter.
Four ANC members of parliament, however, voted in favor of impeaching Ramaphosa, and a few more did not show up for the vote.
Ramaphosa is seeking his re-election as ANC leader at the ANC’s national conference, which begins on Friday in Johannesburg.
