King Mohammed VI sent a message of condolences to President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, following the death of former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin at the age of 96.
In his message, the Sovereign said he was deeply saddened by the passing of former Chinese head of state Zemin. The sovereign extended to Xi Jinping, the family of the deceased and the friendly Chinese people, his heartfelt condolences and sincere compassion.
Jiang led China amid historic events as the 1989 turbulence, the resurgence of market-oriented reforms, the return of Hong Kong from the British administration in 1997, and Beijing’s admission into the World Trade Organization in 2001.
Jiang relinquished his official title in 2004 but remained an influence behind the scenes.
