The UN Secretary-General and the UN Security Council offered their condolences to Morocco following the death of a Moroccan blue helmet in an attack on the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
The member of the Moroccan contingent died in an attack that targeted Obo airfield, while he was securing the airport’s perimeter for a plane to land.
In a statement attributable to the UNSG Spokesperson, the UN expressed profound grief to the family of the fallen peacekeeper and to the Kingdom and people of Morocco.
The UNSG strongly condemned the attack and recalled that “targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law”. He also called on the Central African authorities to spare no effort in identifying the perpetrators of this tragedy so that they can be brought to justice.
For its part, the UNSC also condemned “in the strongest terms all attacks, provocations and incitement to violence against MINUSCA by armed groups and other perpetrators”, and expressed their deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the killed peacekeeper.
