Morocco will set up an Intangible Cultural Heritage Center in charge of safeguarding the Moroccan specificities in the world’s cultural heritage.
The Center will be tasked with producing an inventory of the national cultural heritage across the Kingdom. In addition to this database, the facility will offer academic training to build the capacities of professionals in the field.
The announcement was made by King Mohammed VI in a message to the participants in the 17th Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, scheduled in Rabat from Nov. 28 to Dec. 3, under the chairmanship of Morocco. The message was read out by Mohamed Hajoui, the Secretary-General of the Government of Morocco.
The international event is chaired by Samir Addahre, Permanent Representative of Morocco to UNESCO, and will be attended by representatives of States parties, non-governmental organizations, and cultural institutions.
Morocco is included in three multinational files, namely: “Date palm: knowledge, skills, traditions and practices”, “Arabic Line: knowledge, skills and practices” and “Knowledge, experience and practices related to the production and consumption of couscous.” In addition to the first report of Morocco on the status of the element “Taskiwin, martial dance of the western High Atlas”.
The committee members of this session will be composed of: Angola, Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Czechia, Ethiopia, Germany, India, Malaysia, Mauritania, Morocco, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, South Korea, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Uzbekistan, and Viet Nam
The committee will evaluate 24 reports on an element inscribed on the Urgent Safeguarding List, 42 reports on the implementation of the 2003 Convention and the current status of elements inscribed on Representative List by States Parties in Europe, 4 nominations to the Urgent Safeguarding List, 46 nominations to Representative List, 5 proposals to the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices, 1 request for International Assistance
