Algerian opposition activist Zaki Hannache announced that the UN had granted him a refugee status in Tunisia, following repetitive calls to prevent his extradition to Algeria.
Zaki Hannache, a prominent figure of the Hirak Movement that sparked off protests in Algeria in 2019, had fled to Tunisia to escape his government’s repression.
The said massive movement had forced former Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to step down.
Hannache continued his activities on social media, shedding light on the crimes perpetrated by the Algerian regime against its people and Hirak detainees.
He had been previously detained for weeks by the Algerian authorities for “supporting terrorism” and “spreading fake news” before releasing him temporarily.
Hannache said on his Facebook page that he was forced to apply for this status after direct and indirect threats by the Algerian authorities and indications that he could be targeted in Tunisia.
