Morocco is experiencing an extreme drought episode, the worst in 40 years, according to the United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
A report by the organization revealed that “the 12 months ending in August 2022 were the driest for at least 40 years in Morocco.”
The 2022 report, which monitors the state of the world’s climate, noted that the last eight years are on track to become the warmest ever.
The report showed that severe heatwaves, droughts, and devastating floods have affected millions and cost billions this year, adding that Europe’s drought is resulting in low water levels for many rivers, including the Rhine, the Loire, and the Danube.
The report warned that many glaciers recorded heavy losses in 2022 for the 26th successive year due to climate change and ever-increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
