At least 252 people, including children, have perished and hundreds have been injured as a result of an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 that hit West Java, Indonesia, according to the country’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).
Governor of West Java, Ridwan Kamil, provided an updated death toll, stating that more than 13,000 people had been displaced, and the majority of victims were public school students who were attending after-hours classes at Islamic schools when they collapsed.
Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” a region that frequently experiences quakes and volcanic eruptions. It spans from South America and California on one side of the Pacific to Japan and Indonesia on the other, making it one of the planet’s seismically active zones.
