The United States is bolstering defense systems in the Middle East amid tensions with Iran, a US top official said on Sunday, explaining that such cooperation had probably helped prevent an Iranian attack on Saudi Arabia.
During a conference, General Michael Kurilla, commander at the United States Central Command (Centcom), announced the deployment of more than 100 drones in the Gulf seas by a US-led task force by next year. This statement follows last week’s attack, in the Sea of Oman, on an oil tanker owned by an Israeli millionaire, which Israel and the US blamed on Iran.
The United States and several Gulf countries regularly denounce Tehran’s actions in this particularly strategic maritime zone that connects the Gulf oil countries to world markets.
In recent months, Israel has been trying to convince the West to close the door on negotiations with Tehran, aimed at reviving the historic 2015 agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.
