President of FIFA Gianni Infantino stated, on Saturday, that engagement was the only means of advancing human rights and called hypocrites those who criticized the treatment of migrant workers by World Cup host Qatar.
He remarked, during a tense press conference in the Qatari capital on the eve of the competition, that Europe should confront its prior transgressions before criticizing Qatar.
Qatar, which won the privilege to host the world football championship in 2010, has come under fire for its treatment of migrant labor and track record on human rights.
Despite the fact that homosexuality is prohibited in the nation, Qatar has stated that all fans are welcome to attend the premier event.
“I have been speaking about this topic with the highest leadership of the country. Several times, not just once. They have confirmed that everyone is welcome,” the FIFA president said.
Critics also questioned Qatar’s decision to forbid the sale of alcohol inside stadiums while hosting the competition as it was the first Arab nation to do so.
Additionally, he noted that this was not unusual because drinking is prohibited in football stadiums in several major European countries, including Scotland, France, Spain, Portugal, and Spain.
