The Hassan II Agronomic and Veterinary Institute (IAV) published a negative report on the Kingdom’s water resources, criticizing the government’s policy in managing this vital resource.
According to this report, the water table has shrunk significantly due to reduced supply, overexploitation, and poor water governance.
The document pointed out the lack of reliable and updated data to address this problem, and the absence of a clear plan for water conservation, except for some procedures used at critical times.
The report provided several examples in this regard, such as the illegal use of groundwater for irrigation in some areas, and the expansion of lands using groundwater.
Amid the drought that hit Morocco, the report stressed the need for a radical change in water resource management, and called for looking beyond the current dam building solution which is not sustainable.
